A party, a stranger and a nonchalant act that does not last very long.

Lending Love started as a fictional scene. The protagonist goes out with a pretty clear idea: have a one-night adventure, lend some love for a while and avoid making things complicated.

That is where the title comes from. It is a playful, slightly provocative phrase, as if love, affection or desire could be lent out for one night, with no promises and not too many questions.

But the night does not go exactly the way he expected.

A night without too many complications

At first, the protagonist shows up acting very nonchalant. He seems comfortable in this kind of situation and carries himself like he has everything under control.

We wanted the song to keep that mood throughout: sensual, playful, a little cheeky and slightly mysterious. There is a hint of danger, but there is also a lot of humor. We were not trying to build a profound story or make a grand statement about love. We just wanted to tell the story of a night that slips a little outside the plan.

Then she appears.

The stranger smiles at him, seems to share the joke and eventually takes him by the hand, leading him into the dark. His act of not caring falls apart, and he is completely hooked.

The night changes direction because she takes the lead. She is not just someone the protagonist watches from across the room. She is the one who invites him to follow and ends up disarming that whole indifferent attitude.

Leaving something to the imagination

The lyric is full of suggestive lines such as "party in the back" and "Nobody has to know." We wanted to leave them as images instead of explaining exactly what happens afterward.

The song works better when it leaves room for each listener to imagine the situation. Maybe it is an escape from the party, a conversation somewhere more private or something else entirely. There is no hidden answer that needs to be decoded.

The fun is in the energy of the moment: the mix of attraction, mystery and the feeling that something is about to happen.

A melody that arrived fully formed

Around the time the song was written, Pedro was listening to a lot of music with similar themes and energy. Some of his references were Måneskin, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet and "Bad Habit" by The Kooks.

Those were Pedro's personal references, not influences the whole band necessarily shared. The song started taking shape while he was listening to that kind of music, until one day the melody suddenly arrived in the shower.

It came with the lyrics too. It was a complete idea, especially the chorus, and Pedro recorded it so he would not lose it.

Pablo built the song's main riff from that melody and the chorus lyrics. After that, we expanded the composition with the rest of the band, slowly building the arrangement and the full sound.

A lighter side of Resonance

Within Still in Time, Lending Love is a lighter, more spontaneous song. It is the album's fourth song, coming after Not Enough.

It also captures an important part of making this first record: trying different things and finding out what Resonance sounds like when the subject, energy or kind of story changes.

We had been exploring songs that were more emotional, dramatic or introspective. Lending Love let us do something more direct, fun and physical. It is a song for the setlist that does not need a complicated explanation.

It is simply a fun song. We liked the idea, it had energy, and we wanted it on the album.

A hand behind the curtain

The previous Lending Love cover was an abstract, colorful heart. For the new version, we wanted to represent the theme in a more mysterious way.

The image shows a man's hand behind a curtain, reaching toward a woman's hand. We do not see the whole scene or know what is on the other side. We only see that moment of reaching out, like the instant when two people recognize each other and decide to keep the night going.

The cover does not try to explain the whole story. It captures the attraction and anticipation right before something happens.

There is no hidden message behind Lending Love. It is a spontaneous, sensual and entertaining song that came from a melody appearing out of nowhere and from wanting to explore another side of the Resonance sound.
